Languages
There are six languages throughout the Twelve Nations, though most people
speak Common (or a dialect thereof.) Of course, Dwarves and Elves are taught
their racial languages, and halflings normally learn them as well. When the
Fae interact with the mortals of the Twelve Nations, they tend to use Common,
but they also appear to be fluent in the racial languages as well as Caloda.
- Caloda - This language is primarily the province of Priests
and Mages, being used for spell incantations and certain
religious ceremonies. Legends claim that this is the tongue
spoken by the Gods. It is most commonly used by Vodelian
high society.
- Common - As the name implies, this is the common tongue of
the Twelve Nations. It originated in the Loyen Isles,
and gained popularity due to the ease of learning. It
rapidly spread to Solari and Rakis, having no native
languages of their own. Traders from Rakis spread it,
and it was soon picked up by Elgidom merchants as well.
From there, it rapidly became lingua franca.
- Dwarven - The native tongue of the Dwarves. It's fairly
rare, normally spoken only in Lessia. It is a fast-paced,
staccato language.
- Elven - The native tongue of the Elves. A flowery, poetic
language, many Bards are familiar with this tongue.
- Erya - The old tongue of Xavona, Zuhayr, and Herath.
As with Jager, this has been mostly replaced by
Common.
- Jager - This is the old tongue spoken in Daryion,
Elgidom, and Akelor. Fairly rare now, due to Common.
